There’s a piano in our kitchen that’s been there for a longass time and has gotten very outta tune and beat up. You can’t really use it to play normal things but it works really well for droney shit cuz it sounds kinda like it’s in just intonation. It sounds really beautiful and I often use it for meditation purposes, hearing those out of tune notes ring out sends me into a trance. I knew I had to record it at some point so I waited until I had the house to myself for a couple hours and set up four microphones: two for inside the piano and two on the windowsill outside to capture street noise and the sound of the piano from outside. The outside mics by themselves had this really distant and surreal sound and there were a lotta great moments from the street where people would be driving by and blasting their own music that would go in and out like some kinda cosmic radio. Obviously I was thinking of the Well Tuned Piano by LaMonte Young while playing these and they are heavily inspired by such. I put a few nails in the piano strings just for an added texture. These improvs are supposed to have a meditative quality to them so listen with your eyes closed preferably in a quiet space.
