about

Before Cordoba opened for Alfa Mist on Friday the 13th, our biggest show yet, I took my soprano out into the courtyard outside my apartment with a bowl full of weed and a tall can of Heineken to have sort of a spiritual centering/meditation before the show. I recorded everything on my phone voice memos as usual and felt a deeper kinship with the instrument that day. It was a very soulful experience as the sun was high in the sky and there was sort of a sympathetic breeze flowing through the air. These improvs are sort of a collection of a lot of ideas that I've been working on over the years, cultivating into my own style on the saxophone. It felt right to play the prayer "Saziwa Nguwe" by Nduduzo Makhathini as it had been floating around in my head the past week or so and I felt very powerful playing it in this moment as I walked around the courtyard, playing a drone before starting the melody. I found myself using the space a lot too, using the walls and ground reverberations to alter the timbre of the instrument. The Greek myth of Scylla and Charybdis seemed to fit these improvs as the soprano has sort of a mythical, mystical character to it and I thought the moral of the story being the hard choice between two bad things was a metaphor of how life has been lately. I dunno, I'm bored of writing about it, just listen to the music.
